The Process
For your unit to be considered “lead-safe”, it must be free from flaking, chipping, or deteriorating paint or any kind. The Lead Dust Technician must first perform a visual inspection to assess the condition of the unit and ensure all paint is intact. Once the unit passes the visual inspection, a lead dust swipe test will be performed.
The Process Cont.
After the lead dust samples are collected, they will be sent off to an independent nationally accredited laboratory for testing. The results will be emailed back to us to assess and determine whether the unit has acceptable levels of lead dust according to the local ordinances.
The Results
As per the City of Philadelphia guidelines, the lead dust levels on floors should be less than 40 micrograms/square foot, less than 250 micrograms/square foot for windowsills, and less than 400 micrograms/square foot for window troughs. If your unit is under these levels, a lead-safe certificate will be issued. The certification will be valid for 4 years.
As per the Municipality of Norristown, the lead dust levels on floors should be less than 10 micrograms/square foot, and less than 100 micrograms for windowsills in order to obtain certification.
